In an educational front, learning support for handicapped students is important. For these students, several types of support systems and devices have been studied. Among others, for the student suffering from paralysis of a body, drawing on a computer is widely used as occupational therapy. The drawing on a computer usually employs the control devices such as a track ball, a mouse controller, and so on. Underwater Vehicles
The main goal of this chapter is to introduce to the design and working hypotheses for the construction of a low-cost Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) devoted to pipeline and cable inspections. Underwater inspection is mainly necessary on account of the periodic surveys for the preventive maintenance of submarine infrastructure in the off-shore industries. The advantages of doing them with AUVs instead of Remote Operated Vehicles (ROV) or Towed Unmanned Devices (TUD) are low costs and better data quality in the inspection missions. The vehicle presented in this chapter was thought as an experimental platform to test multiple algorithms and to develop new technology, mainly using artificial intelligence techniques. Humanoid Robots
Research in describing humanoid motions begins with the works for describing human dances. Popular dance notation systems include Benesh, Labanotation, and EW. Benesh is the simplest one and is designed particularly for dance description. Labanotation is more comprehensive for describing human motion in general. EW can be applied on linkage systems other than human body. Computers are now used to aid the interpretation and visualization of these notations. Researchers used Labanotation as a basis to represent human motion, proposed to extract key motion primitives, and proposed architectures for digital representation of human movements. Particle Swarm Optimization
Particle swarm optimization (PSO) was originally designed and introduced by Eberhart and Kennedy. The PSO is a population based search algorithm based on the simulation of the social behavior of birds, bees or a school of fishes. This algorithm originally intends to graphically simulate the graceful and unpredictable choreography of a bird folk. Each individual within the swarm is represented by a vector in multidimensional search space. This vector has also one assigned vector which determines the next movement of the particle and is called the velocity vector. The PSO algorithm also determines how to update the velocity of a particle. Each particle updates its velocity based on current velocity and the best position it has explored so far; and also based on the global best position explored by swarm. Particle Swarm Optimization
